The first Tour de France in 1903 with six stages averaging over 250 miles each with three rest days between each stage. Maurice Garin’s overall victory was by 3 hrs, still the greatest margin of victory in Tour de France history. Le Tour covered 2400 km in six stages, beginning July 1, 1903, ending on July 19. It was heavily promoted in the newspapers, and people came out to watch even in remote areas.
