Mad King’s Challenge and Mad River Century

Mad River Century

The Mad River Century starts just north of Warren from the Hyde Away Inn in Irasville near the intersection of Rt. 100 and Rt. 17 east of the big mountain ridge and instead circles around a long but smaller ridge, following the Dog, White and Mad Rivers. Head north on Rt. 100, right on Rt. 100B, then follow Rt. 2 east to Montpelier. Ride south on Rt. 12 and 12A to Bethel, Rt. 107 to Stockbridge, Rt. 100 back north to the start in Irasville. The total climb is 5100 ft.

Mad Kings Challenge

The Mad King Challenge is a century + 11 mile bicycle ride on the semi-annual Charles River Wheelmen’s Velo Vermont weekend tour of the Green Mountains from the White Horse Inn in Warren, VT. The ride heads west over the Green Mountains through four mountain “gaps” (Vermont for mountain passes), beginning with a 6 mile climb up the 2356 ft. Appalachian Gap. From the top you can see Lake Champlain. The steep and winding descent is followed by six miles of rolling terrain, and then you’re climbing up 2424 ft.Lincoln Gap (2424 ft). Another steep descent is followed by 10 miles of road, then a climb up 2149′ Middlebury Gap (2149ft). The grades on the climbs exceed 12%.Ride thirteen more miles to the last climb up 2170 ft. Brandon Gap (2170ft). But even after these four steep climbs, you will still be riding thirty one miles left to the inn, mostly flat except for a hill named Granville Gulf, then five easy miles back to the inn. The total ascent for this route is 9000 feet.
