The countryside north of Worcester, Massachusetts is rural and hilly with some great quiet roads for cycling. We started this 25 mile ride from the parking lot at Tower Hill Botanical Garden in Boylston. Admission is free for members; otherwise you pay admission at the estate entrance. After visiting the garden, we took the closed former entrance road down the hill and rode north for several miles along Wachusett Reservoir. Before reaching Clinton, we turned east along some very moderate hills that eventually brought us to a surprising view of the Boston skyline.
The tiny town Berlin (pronounced BURL-en) is charming New England at its best, and a good place to stop for refreshments. Just a few miles further along the route, you’ll want to stop at Indian Head Farm, which seven generations of the Wheeler-Hastings family have operated since 1782. Returning on Garden St., you’ll ride along a couple of escarpments that will offer a bit of climbing before arriving back at Tower Hill for a total of about 1400 ft. of climb total on the ride.
