The Washington and Old Dominion (W&OD) Trail follows a rail line that was abandoned in in 1968. The Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority purchase of right-if-way purchases in 1982. A 45 miles 9′ wide paved asphalt bike path and 32 miles of crushed stone and dirt running/equestrian paths make up the 100 ft. linear park that runs from Purcellville VA to Shirlington in Arlington County, VA.
